One dies, many injured in police, Shiites clash

One person is said to have been killed while many others sustained various injuries during a clash between the police and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as Shiite in Abuja.

The situation caused pandemonium in the area as motorists and passers-by scampered for safety to avoid being caught in the melee.

According to an eyewitness, trouble started when a detachment of armed policemen allegedly fired teargas canisters and live bullets to disperse the group who had staged a protest near the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) junction in Maitama.

The protesters who came out in their numbers were seen with placards demanding the immediate release of their leader, Ibraheem El-zakzaky and his wife being held at the Kaduna Correctional Center.

“One of the protesters was shot in the stomach in the process, while leaving many others with injuries,” the witness narrated.
