2019: PDP screens Govs Ugwuanyi, Umahi, Ikpeazu, others

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has screened its three governors in the south east and seven others from Imo state ahead of its forthcoming governorship primaries.

The Governors who were screened at the zonal headquarters of the party in Enugu at the weekend by the governorship screening committee assigned from the national secretariat included Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, David Umahi and Okezie Ikpeazu, Enugu, Ebonyi and Abia states respectively.

The screening exercise which was orderly and peaceful was conducted amidst tight security as the three governors in turns took a bow before the Harry Nwoko’s led 3-man committee while the seven other aspirants who were from Imo state had a rigorous exercise.

Some of the seven jostling for the guber seat were asked to tender originals of their credentials and other relevant documents including discharge or National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate.

Addressing newsmen shortly at the end of the screening Chairman of the Committee, Chief Nwoko assured the aspirants of a level playing ground saying that they would do their best to be fair to all aspirants.

He said: “We will be fair as we are not here to witch-hunt anybody. We are lucky that we have good working governors.

He stated that the incumbent governors were asked to take a bow based on the fact that the committee had gone through the soft copies of their credentials earlier.

“We will try our best to conduct the screening. We are privileged to be here to screen all governorship aspirants in our party. We are here to serve you and serve the party.

Also speaking, the South East- PDP Zonal Chairman, Chief Augustine Umahi said they were ready for the screening exercise urging his colleagues to be orderly.

He told newsmen that the party has been restructured and rebranded with a view to recapturing power from the ruling All progressive Congress (APC) at both in the zone and national levels.
