Woman in court for allegedly stealing friend’s car, pet dog

A 26-year-old woman, Dita Peter, who allegedly stole a car worth N4.2 million and pet dog belonging to her friend, on Wednesday appeared in a Wuse Zone Six Chief Magistrates Court, Abuja.

The police charged Peter, who resides in Games Village, Abuja with theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, Peter Ejike, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on  Feb. 9.

He alleged that on  Feb. 11, the complainant,  Diwan Peter,  who resides in Jabi, Abuja reported the matter through a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Force CID, Abuja

He also alleged that on  Feb. 9,  Diwan discovered that his Honda Accord with registration number: YAB 660 MC, valued at N4.2 million, belonging to his friend parked in front of his house was stolen by the defendant.

Ejike further alleged that the defendant also stole a pet dog worth N180,000 and a Samsung A20 cell phone worth N53,000.

He  the defendant was arrested on Feb. 21 and the car was recovered without the number plate.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of  Section  287 of the Penal Code.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

The defendant’s counsel, Gadaffi Nwegbe, prayed the court to admit his client to bail on the most liberal terms,citing Section 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act ( ACJA) as the basis for the bail.

Magistrate Ibrahim Muhammed admitted the defendant to defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum.

Muhammed adjourned the matter until April 16, for hearing.
