Waiting to see if NBA will make good its threat

More than a month it threatened to sanction any lawyer in the country who engages in disparaging the judiciary and its officers, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is yet to make example of anyone, leaving many to wonder if the threat was just for the making.
This is because the disparaging of the judiciary and its officers by lawyers had continued despite the NBA threat.
Just at the weekend, legal luminary, Professor Itse Sagay, again took the Supreme Court to the cleaners over its verdict on the Rivers State Governorship election.
Sagay, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Anti-Corruption, branded the verdict as a farewell to election petitions in the country.
The verdict, Sagay said in a in a 52 page review of the apex court’s decision, was shocking, catastrophic and uncalled for.
Hear him: “In the Richter scale of earthquakes, it must have measured up to 15: enough to induce a miscarriage, even in a man.
“It was the worst shock ever created by a Supreme Court decision since I was knowledgeable enough to follow and understand Court judgments”.
Sagay’s latest criticism comes despite reasons adduced by the apex court for its verdict on Rivers governorship poll.
The legal luminary had earlier upbraided the apex court justices over the same ruling which affirmed Nyesome Wike as the validly elected governor of Rivers State.
While this latest action of Prof. Sagay is unfortunate and should not be encouraged, it remains to be seen if the NBA will be courageous enough to wield the big stick against Sagay and other lawyers despite its warning have continued to disparage the judiciary and its officers.
Only when the NBA does this will it be seen as serious and committed to the promotion and protection of the judiciary and judges who by their oath cannot come out publicly to defend themselves.
