UNILAG dismiss lecturers caught on tape demanding sex

Boniface Igbeneghu and Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo, both teachers at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), have been fired for soliciting sex from a reporter posing as an admission seeker.
The Senate had formed a committee to look into their demand, which had been recorded on tape.
In a BBC investigative series called Africa Eye, an undercover journalist named Kiki Mordi pretended to be a 17-year-old prospective student.
The documentary, which was released in October 2019, focused on sexual harassment in Nigerian and Ghanaian higher institutions.
Igbeneghu, Oladipo, and University of Ghana teachers Ransford Gyampo and Paul Butakor were all named in the report.
Igbeneghu was a lecturer at the European Languages and Integration Studies Department.
At the commencement of the scandal, the former sub-dean of the Faculty of Arts was fired as the head pastor of a local Foursquare Gospel Church.
Oladipo spoke at the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Department of Economics. The pair had been put on hold.
UNILAG Registrar Azeez Oladejo issued a statement on Wednesday announcing their dismissal for “misconduct.”
It was revealed that the decision was adopted by the Governing Council at its meeting on May 31, 2021.
The move, according to Oladejo, was taken in accordance with Section 18 of the University of Lagos Act 1967.
“Council further directed that the management should review the sexual harassment policy as may be necessary and institute effective strategies to prevent future occurrence”, he added.
