UNICAL VC’s Legal Adviser, Police Officer In NDLEA Net Over Drug Trafficking

Calabar
The legal adviser to the Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Barrister Mannix Orog Nyaim, has been arrested by National Drugs Law Agency (NDLEA). Also in NDLEA custody is a police officer whom it was alleged had been aiding the Unical man to clear way for the contraband drugs to be taken to its destinations. The duo were arrested in Calabar and hard drugs worth several billions of Naira impounded from them.
The foreign partners of the suspects in North Korea have also been arrested and investigations are on top gear. The legal adviser to the VC, a source close to his office at UNICAL lamented that the suspect has not been in the office for a long time neither has he been seen in the University.
Unconfirmed source said that the legal adviser had been travelling across the globe for one thing or the other.
Investigations revealed that the boat that was conveying the hard drugs was intercepted at a river in Calabar and efforts to let it and the suspects as well as the drugs go failed even as money exchanged hands.
When information filtered to the Commissioner of Police that a police officer was arrested and the Command in Calabar made frantic efforts to get their man released but the efforts yielded no positive results as the NDLEA had already transferred the matter to Abuja and at this point, the Command could not do anything.
However, the Police source said that the suspect (Police) had not been coming to work but was earning his salaries. Some of the staff of the legal department at the University also told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the man has not been coming to work and whenever he comes, he will never complain of lack of money.
When this correspondent visited the office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Zana Akpaku, he was said to have travelled and other persons interviewed confirmed the incident but pleaded for anonymity.
Confirming the story the Information Officer to the Vice Chancellor, Mr Effiong Eyo, said the legal adviser had not been in office for some time now. When contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo also confirmed the incident.
She said the matter has been transferred to Abuja for further investigations with a view to ascertaining the true picture of the incident and involvement of the legal adviser .
