UN Deputy Secretary-General visit Nigeria, discuss humanitarian challenges with minster

Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Nentawe Yilwatda, yesterday played host to the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, in Abuja.
The visit highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing Nigeria’s pressing humanitarian challenges in line with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
Minister Yilwatda emphasized the need for urgent action, outlining the government’s proactive measures to tackle food insecurity and displacement. His insights were instrumental in shaping the discussions, which focused on enhancing partnerships and fostering collaboration with UN agencies to effectively address these pressing issues.
Amina Mohammed praised Minister Yilwatda and his department for their critical role in coordinating humanitarian efforts. She acknowledged the Nigerian government’s commitment to addressing these challenges and underscored the importance of a unified response.

The meeting aimed to align the UN’s global initiatives with Nigeria’s local needs, ensuring that aid and resources are directed where they are most needed. Minister Yilwatda reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling President Bola A. Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Mandate, which focuses on creating a more resilient and prosperous Nigeria.
Both leaders expressed their dedication to working closely together to alleviate immediate humanitarian needs while fostering long-term development and stability in the region. The collaboration with the UN is seen as a vital step towards recovery, with Minister Yilwatda’s leadership expected to pave the way for more integrated approaches to humanitarian assistance.
In a related development, Minister Yilwatda disclosed that the Federal Government is committed to partnering with the UN to provide long-lasting solutions to help lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty. The Minister also noted that the ministry would soon release its 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan to provide Nigerians with a guide to the government’s drive towards addressing poverty in the country.
