Ugwuanyi inaugurates new court complex, roads in Nsukka

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Friday inaugurated a new court complex and roads in Nsukka, built by the state government.

Ugwuanyi, in a remark before handing over the new buildings to Enugu State judiciary, said it was aimed at improving access to justice delivery.

“I swore an oath as governor to protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to ensure all get justice, so I will do all within my capacity to ensure quick dispensation of justice.

“My administration will continue to do its best to provide enabling environment for the judiciary to enable them to discharge their duties, “he said.

He said other courts that had been built in different local governments in the state would soon be inaugurated and handed over to the judiciary.

The governor commended the bar and the bench for making use of the structure available to do their job while the court buildings were being constructed.

He also commended the contractor for delivering the project on schedule.

The Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Priscilla Emehelu, said the event marked another bold step in the administration of Ugwuanyi toward improving access to justice delivery

“Over the years, lack of necessary infrastructure in terms of inadquate courtrooms and attendant facilities remained a major challenge to prompt and effective justice delivery in the state.

“With new courts this present administration has built in almost every local government in the state, the problem of inadequate courtrooms have become a thing of the past.

“Judiciary in Enugu State will forever remain grateful to the present administration in the state for always giving judiciary special attention,” she said.

Emehelu listed new courts inaugurated in Nsukka as two High Court building complexes and one Magistrate Court complex with many courtrooms, as well as Registry building complex.

According to her, the governor will, in no distant time, inaugurate other court buildings that have been completed in other parts of the state.

The Chief Judge said access to justice was the ability of people to seek and obtain remedies through formal institutions of justice such as courts among others to ventilate the rights of citizens.

“Delay in justice delivery is one of the seemingly intractable problems in national judiciary system.

“The effect of failure to deliver justice on time can have deleterious impact on the lives of all parties involved.

“The bold step of government in erecting these ultra modern court buildings with many courtrooms will to a large extent mitigate the challenge of delay in justice delivery in the state,” she said.

She commended Nigeria Bar Association, Nsukka branch for providing its Bar Centre for judges to use for sitting when the old court buildings were demolished so as to build the new ones.

Earlier, Chief Patrick Omeje, the Chairman of Nsukka local government, who was represented by his Vice-chairman, Mr Cosmos Ugwueze, applauded Ugwuanyi for the massive transformation of Enugu state since assumption of office.
