Trial Of IMN Leader, El-Zakzaky Resumes Today

The trial of Sheikh Ibrahim Elzakzaky, the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, and his wife Zeenat resumes today at a Kaduna state high court in the state capital.

Elzakzaky and his wife are facing an eight-count indictment that involves culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and public nuisance, among other items.

When the charges against the IMN chief and his wife were read to them on Sept. 29, 2020, they pleaded not guilty.

Justice Gideon Kurada, the presiding judge, adjourned the case on March 8, 2021, after prosecuting counsel Chris Umar presented 14 witnesses who testified against the IMN chief.

Two Army officers, a former Director of State Security Service, police officers, and a medical doctor are among the witnesses who appeared in court.

During the last sitting on March 8, the court accepted many things in evidence, including video recordings, Dane weapons, and SIMCARDS, before adjourning the case.

The prosecution attorney is expected to bring one more witness before the court today, after which he will close his case and Sheikh Elzakzaky’s attorney will begin his defense.

Elzakzaky and his wife Zeenat have been detained since their arrest in December 2015 in Zaria, Kaduna State, following a bloody clash between IMN members and soldiers.
