Tinubu, Peter Obi, Fayemi Share Light Moment at Vatican During Pope’s Installation Mass

In a rare public appearance together, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi met at the Vatican on Sunday during the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV.
The high-profile encounter occurred inside St. Peter’s Basilica, where the three Nigerian leaders—seated among global dignitaries—shared a light-hearted exchange that captured attention beyond religious significance.
According to eyewitnesses, Fayemi spotted President Tinubu seated with members of the Nigerian delegation and invited Obi to join him in greeting the President. Demonstrating camaraderie despite past political rivalries, Obi agreed.
“Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence,” Fayemi said as they approached.
President Tinubu, known for his sharp wit, quipped in response, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”
The remark drew laughter from Obi, who good-naturedly replied, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”
The moment, though brief, was seen by many observers as a gesture of unity among Nigeria’s top political figures, especially in a year where national cohesion remains a key concern.
Both Obi and Fayemi, devout Catholics and Papal knights, were in Rome as part of the global Catholic community marking the ascension of Pope Leo XIV.
The Vatican event has now become a diplomatic and symbolic highlight for Nigeria, offering a glimpse of respectful interaction across political lines.
