Tinubu confers national honours on D’Tigress, gives them $100,000 each
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The president also gave then cash prize of $100,000, and housing, following their historic win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The announcement was made on Monday during a reception at the State House in Abuja.
The reception was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, alongside First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Each player will also receive a flat apartment in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate, while the team’s technical crew was awarded $50,000 in naira equivalent.
The celebration follows D’Tigress’ commanding 78–64 victory over Mali in the final of the tournament held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The win secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.
Vice President Shettima praised the team’s resilience and unity, describing them as a symbol of excellence and a beacon of hope for young Nigerians.
“This administration remains committed to promoting sports as a unifying force and a platform for projecting Nigeria’s greatness,” Shettima said during the ceremony.
