‘The struggle has started’ — Obi asks Obidients to vote ADC in Saturday’s by-elections

Peter Obi, the 2023 LP presidential candidate has urged his supporters to vote for ADC, the coalition party, in the forthcoming by-elections.
Obi published this statement on his X page on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s by-elections all over the country due to the leadership crisis that has now ravaged the Labour Party.
Early this month, INEC had excluded the names of LP candidates from its electoral list which resulted in a protest by its members in Abuja.
The absence of LP candidates on the ballot has now prompted Peter Obi to appeal to his supporters to instead vote for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)
“On the 16th of August 2025, Nigerians will go to the polling units again for the by-elections.
“This is expected to take place in the 16 states of the federation, with 2 senatorial, 5 federal house of representatives and 9 state assembly seats available for voting,” he wrote.
“Kindly note that the Labour Party has no candidates recognised by INEC due to the internal crisis.
“I humbly urge every member of the Obidient and COPDEM families to go out and vote for the coalition political party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in their respective states.
“The struggle for Nigeria has started,” he added.
Since the last general elections, the LP has been divided into two factions: Julius Abure-led national working committee and the Nenadi Usman faction with both trying to assert legitimacy and control over party activities.
On August 12, Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the Abure faction, announced that the election could be nullified if INEC omits its candidates from the ballot.
Ifoh said the Electoral Act 2022 allows any political party excluded from an election to approach the court for a remedy.
However, the Nenadi Usman-led faction praised the INEC decision, stating that only the “lawful leaders” of the party should be allowed to submit the candidates’ list.
Although Peter Obi has joined a host of other renowned politicians to adopt the ADC as a coalition party ahead of 2027 elections, he is still affiliated with the LP.
Nevertheless, if the leadership issues with the LP continues, it is just a matter of time before shifts his tent to a better opposition, with PDP already begging for his return.
