Tension in Warri over land dispute

 There is serious tension in Warri as family members of Merogun in Merogun Community in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State engaged each other in fierce sporadic gun battle over a disputed land inherited from their late father Tuesday evening.

The shootings continued till Wednesday September 27 while several commercial shops were forced to close down.

Although nobody has been confirmed dead but many residents are said to be seriously injured.

Some residents have also fled their homes as a result of the overnight shootings.

A Source who craved anonymity  Stated that members of the Merogun family including children and thugs allegedly engaged themselves in the battle over ownership of a disputed land from their late father.

The Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Mohammed Shaba said, “I’m not aware. Why not find out from the DPO in that area?”

The Divisional Police Officer, “A” Division in Warri, CSP Kenneth Zuokumor stated that there was a “fracas” in the area yesterday afternoon in which he personally intervened stressing that,”I am not aware of any shootings overnight in the area.”

CSP Zuokumor disclosed that he has since yesterday afternoon invited both parties to a meeting in his office today.

Contacted, the Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka also stated that he was not aware of the incident.

“No Sir! I am not aware but let me find out and get back to you.”

Already, residents are relocating from the troubled area while miscreant are busy looting properties.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen on Tuesday night shot dead the Delta State Provost of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria simply identified as Folorunsho near Odibo Estate in Effurun,Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The deceased who doubles as the Public Relations Officer of the Vigilante in “A” Division Warri Area was unarmed and alone at the time when the unknown gunmen suddenly opened fire on him.

The matter was quickly reported at the  Enerhen Police Station before the remains of the deceased was deposited in the mortuary same night.

The incident has caused panic to other Vigilante members who are currently mourning their colleague.

The Enerhen Divisional Police Officer, CSP Emmanuel Yakubu declined comments on the matter but a source within the Police Station who craved anonymity confirmed the report.

The Police source described the incident as “unfortunate” noting like that they (Police) have spread their drag net in search for the killers of the Vigilante member.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim said, he was not aware of the incident.

In a similar vein, another vigilante member simply identified as Moses was also shot dead at Merogun Community Junction in Warri same day while the family members of the Merogun engaged themselves in fierce gun battle over a disputed land last night.
