Tears as Nigerian Students on NDDC Scholarship On Brink Of Deportation

Nigerian students under the auspices of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) are currently faced with the grave consequence of being deported back to Nigeria, following a gross default by the commission to make good on their financial responsibilities to Nigerian students currently engaging their educational pursuits in higher institutions of learning abroad.

Daily Times gathered, through a plea by the UK Chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress that the commission should move swiftly to arrest the situation and save the students, as well as the entire nation from this imminent embarrassment.

The group made this plea through its Publicity Secretary, Mr Jacob Ogunseye in Abuja on Friday.

“The APC UK appeals to the NDDC to respond swiftly to the students in the United Kingdom who are currently on one programme or the other and presently facing deportation threats”, Mr Ogunseye said.

Mr Ogunseye further expressed his regret that a Commission which is adequately funded to cater for the needs of its region has degenerated to allowing its scholars to face all manners of hardship away from home after being promised due financial backing for their academic programmes.

Quoting the chapter’s leader, Mr Ade Omole, Mr Ogunseye said “President Buhari’s administration has put Nigeria on the path where the country can advance its growth, the administration should therefore be supported and encouraged in the interest of all”.

The precarious situation of NDDC scholars abroad is yet another hammer blow to the commission’s reputation, which is currently being enmeshed in a corruption scandal involving about N81b.

The commission is yet to issue a response as at the time of filing this report.
