Suicide: Man hangs self inside church hall

Confusion, sadness, and regrets held sway Friday as Port Harcourt residents woke up to the rare news of a young devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Creek Road, Port Harcourt, simply called Kachi committed suicide in one of the church halls in the church.

Details of the young man’s identity where yet to unfold as parishioners were still, as at the time of this report, making frantic efforts to locate the parents of the young man. The parents were said to have relocated to an unknown location and the Parish Priest of the church was not immediately available.

The incident occurred at the early hours of Friday morning and up until the time of this report, there was no clue to the cause of the suicide.

It was gathered that the deceased, who hailed from Imo State was a devoted member of the church and that he had acted as a mass servant in the church. He was said to be a taxi driver who plied Aggrey / Borokiri route in the State capital, according to the parishioners who volunteered very scanty information on the man.

The parishioners expressed shock by the death of Kachi by suicide in the church, a sad development which, they said, was happening in a church for the first time, to the best of their knowledge.

The sources described Kachi as dedicated servant of God who devoted most of his time to the work of God.

One of the parishioners put the age of the dead man at 20 years, saying that he was single and a hard working man who has been hustling to make ends meet.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Nnamdi Omoni, is yet to confirm the report. However one of the youth leaders in the church (name withheld) confirmed the suicide.
