Stop enrolling SS 1 and 2 students in higher institutions – Proprietor

The Proprietor of Winners Group of Schools in Taraba, Mr Danlami Shamaki, on Tuesday, advised parents against registering their Senior Secondary School (SSS) 1 and 2 children in higher institutions.
Shamaki gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo.
According to him, such students may not be mature enough to withstand the rigours of learning in higher institutions.
He noted that the trend could work against the interest of such students because they were expected to acquire certain knowledge and skills in every class of learning.
“Parents must understand that they are not helping their children by allowing them to enter the university from SS 1 and 2.
“We have discovered that most of these children end up performing poorly because they lack the physical and emotional maturity to meet the academic demands of higher institutions.
“Any kind of class promotion, either from primary to secondary or within the secondary school must be based on merit.
“From experience, irregular promotions are partly responsible for the low standard of education in the country,” he said.
Shamaki, a New York trained teacher, disclosed that his school, in collaboration with some investors, would soon establish a private university in the state.
According to him, the state, which is backward educationally, should consider supporting private schools, as being done by the neighbouring Adamawa Government.
The educationist said supporting private schools with training and learning materials would enhance their productivity.
