Sports ministry, coaches chant war song

Nigeria’s sport federations may begin the upcoming sports season on a crisis note as a group of coaches gear up to embark on a work to rule action in the new year.
The group made up of about thirty coaches belong to the category hired by the National Sports Commission as contract staff as a result of having faith in their ability to perform.
Most of them are tested hands who have done the country proud in their hay days as athletes.
Extra Time discovered that trouble is brewing over the non-payment of nearly ten months salary owed the coaches by the commission.
The last time payment alert rang on their phones was one month back when the commission settled a paltry one month salary across board.
Some of the coaches who spoke on grounds of anonymity said that the informal representations/appeals have been sent to very highly placed officers of the commission with response of “we are discussing it”.
Sources close to the commission confirmed the development but could not place a finger on steps being taken to address the situation.
The affected coaches serve in some of the top rated federations such as athletics, boxing and basketball. It was also revealed that the indebtedness is not limited to Nigerians alone as a foreign coach serving in athletics is on the list of those being owed.
