Spanish football bodies to cooperate on fund and World Cup bid
Spanish football’s two main governing bodies have endorsed a commitment to creating a 10 million euros (10.9 million dollars) fund for struggling athletes, a government statement said on Monday.
The Spanish Sports Council (CSD), the government agency responsible for sport in Spain, held a meeting on Saturday with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga.

“The presidents of La Liga and the federation signed a commitment to creating a contingency fund of 10 million euros to which other entities such as the Footballers Association will be invited to participate to help the most vulnerable athletes,’’ the CSD statement said.
Saturday’s meeting was a symbolic coming together of the federation and the league.
The two bodies have been at loggerheads throughout the coronavirus crisis.
Both sides have now shown willingness to cooperate in an attempt to bring football back as soon as the government’s restrictions allow.
CSD also suggested that greater collaboration was essential for any joint bid with Portugal for the 2030 World Cup final.
“The parties also undertake to work together, and in a coordinated manner abroad, to contribute to the reputation of Spain and to the strengthening of our image as a country of safe sport.
“In this context, the Iberian candidacy for the 2030 World Cup finals becomes especially important, something to which the government will give its full support,’’ the statement said. (dpa/NAN)
