SHOCKING! 23 New Cases Of HIV Recorded In Lagos

The recent finding about HIV spread in Lagos State is alarming and the State government is not taking it with kid gloves

Forty suspected gay men were arrested and arraigned for having sex with fellow men, an act that is prohibited in Nigeria, with a 14-year jail term attached.

As if their offence was not enough, most of them have tested positive for HIV.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) Dr. Sunday Temowo, says the state will curb the spread of the virus within all local council area.

Dr. Temowo, spoke at a press conference after meeting with some agencies and individuals that handle HIV response.

The meeting was held to re-strategise against the spread of the scourge after the recent arrest of the suspected gay men.

According to him, efforts must be intensified to increase the awareness level of Lagos residents so that they could access free HIV Testing services provided by the Lagos State Government to achieve the 90-90-90 initiative by 2020 and eradication of the scourge by 2030.

Temowo stated that the initiative was to get 90% of the residents of Lagos State counselled and tested; get 90% of those that know their status have access to treatment while 90% of those on treatment have viral load suppression to curb cases of new infection.

The government wants all Lagosians to access Free HIV Testing Services (HTS) at the General Hospitals across the State close to their places of residence.
