The incumbent Senator Andy Uba representing Anambra South Senatorial District and the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) for 2019 general election may not contest the forth coming election following the litigation at the Federal High Court in Awka.
According to the suit filed by Hon Azuka Okwuosa, Senatorial aspirant of the APC against the candidacy of Andy Uba at the Awka Federal High Court, the plaintiff prayed the court among others to restrain the second respondent, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting any name whatsoever from the first defendant, APC as the candidate of the party.
Okwuosa also prayed for an order restraining INEC from publishing the name of Any Uba as the candidate of the party for the 2019 Senatorial election and compelling the electoral body to expunge the name of Uba from its records as Senatorial candidate of the party in the area.
Okwuosa further prayed for a declaration that the submission of Andy Uba name as candidate of the party is wrongful and a violation of the construction and guidelines of the APC and section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
The plaintiff also asked the court to declare that APC did not hold any primary election for the nomination of its candidate for Anambra South Senatorial District on the 7th day of October 2018.
Similarly, the Senatorial Candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the same zone, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu may also not participate in the forth coming election following the suit filed by one Chike Chikeluo at the Federal High Court Abuja challenging his candidacy.
Chikeluo contended that there was no primary election held by the party in the zone.
The court ruled that the APGA has no candidate for the proposed election insisting that there was no validly conducted primary election of the party in the area.
Though Ukachukwu has gone to court to appeal against the High Court ruling it is not clear if the court would grant him his prayers that the lower court pronouncement be set aside and ordering INEC to publish his name as candidate of the party.
The only top contestant in Anambra South Senatorial District whose name is on the INEC list for now is Chief Chris Uba younger brother to Andy Uba who is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP and Chief Ifeanyi Ubah of Young Progressives Party YPP.
Speaking to reporters yesterday Chief Ifeanyi Ubah noted that the litigations at the courts are indications of lack of internal democracy is the two political parties adding that with or without the two candidates he is coasting to victory.
He described other candidates as those that are not on ground with the politics of Anambra South Senatorial District and those who have lost touch with the masses in the area.
