Radio stations hand Ghana election victory to Akufo-Addo

Two Ghanaian radio stations are reporting Ghana’s opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo has won the presidential election, although official results have not yet been published.

Mr Akufo-Addo has been “condemned” by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers for claiming victory as tense voters await the result.

The challenger had said he was “quietly confident” he had beaten President John Mahama.

An official with Mr Mahama’s campaign dismissed the claim as “ridiculous”.

But President Mahama himself appeared less bullish when he tweeted this morning:

Joy FM and Citi FM have based their projections on results from Wednesday’s vote announced at constituency level.

Joy FM said Mr Akufo-Addo had 53% of the vote and Mr Mahama had 45%, based on a count of 217 constituencies out of 275 in total. Citi FM gave Akufo-Addo 55% percent based on 190 constituencies.

The electoral commission is set to begin releasing results later today.
