Police team wins IGP Taekwondo Championship

The 2017 edition of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) National Open Taekwondo Championship has ended in Lagos with Nigeria Police taekwondo team emerging the overall champions, while Team Lagos and Team Kebbi came second and third, respectively.

The 3-day event which was held at the Rowe Park Sports Centre Yaba attracted all the Zonal commands of the Nigeria Police formation across the country and saw Zone Eleven emerging as the best zone of the championship that lasted from July 24 to 26, 2017.

Speaking at the occasion, the chief host of the tournament, Ibrahim K. Idris, the Inspector General of Police who was excited on the organization of the event, commended the work force of the Nigeria Police Sports unit for keeping faith with this year’s edition of the championship which is the 6th in the series.

Spurred by the outcome of the championship which was also used as part of the celebration marking the IGPs one year in office since assuming power, Idris promised to continue the sponsorship of the annual tournament.

The IGP who was represented at the grand finale by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anderson Bankole, charged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to make fitness their watch-word since it does not only promote healthy living but goes a long way in ensuring their combat readiness at all time.

The Police Sports Director, DCP Aliyu Abubakar, on his own part, described the IGP, Ibrahim K. Idris as a ‘super cop’ that is ready to go any length in securing the life and properties of every Nigerian.

Abubakar commended his boss for the support even as he promised to ensure that his unit will continue to win laurels for the police as a mark of appreciation for the IGPs support for sports development for the police and the entire Nigeria.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and coordinator of the programme, Stella Ebikefe, a superintendent of police thanked the IGP for matching his words with action by sponsoring the championship that had over 150 players and 10 teams drawn from across the country pitched up for the exercise.
