Police confirms killing of 11 persons in Plateau by gunmen

At least 11 people were killed on Tuesday when gunmen believed to be herdsmen attacked Kulben community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau state.

The attack is the first in Kombun District, the home of Prof. Sonni Tyoden, the Plateau state Deputy Governor.

Previous attacks in the local government area affected neighbouring Gindiri and Mangun Districts, but Kombun has been relatively safe.

The attack began with a suspected cattle rustling attempt in the neighbouring Kon Village at about 8a.m local time. At least one person was injured in the incident that security neutralized before escalating.

Councillor representing Kerang Ward, Mr. Michael Mutding, told our correspondent that the assailants attacked with AK47 rifles before security agents could arrive the village.

Our reporter gathered that 12 people died instantly while another wounded victim passed away hours later.

“At the moment, four people are in hospital with varying degrees of injuries,” an eye witness said.

Confirming the incident, the Plateau state Police Command through its spokesman, Tyopev Mathias said: “Today, at about 0730hrs, the Plateau state Police Command received information that at about 2230hrs, unknown gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked residents of Kulben Village in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau state.

“As a result of the attack, one Klengchin Yusuf and 11 others lost their lives while one person who was critically wounded is receiving treatment at the Mangu General Hospital.

“On receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, directed the deputy commissioner of police to lead detectives to the scene of the crime to stop the attack, arrest perpetrators if seen and to restore normalcy in the affected village.

“Meanwhile, investigation in the case is ongoing and the command solicits for information from members of the public to facilitate early arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of the dastardly act to serve as deterrent to others.”
