Police arrest two for stealing 20 bags of Lake rice

Two suspects have been arrested by the Lagos state police command for allegedly breaking into a warehouse and carting away 20 bags of rice.
It was gathered that the suspects – Nura Rabiu and Ahmed Gombe – had broken into the warehouse in Agric bustop, along Badagry Expressway, where the Lagos state government produced rice was being packed on Tuesday January 10, and made away with the bags of rice.
They were however arrested while trying to flee the scene of the crime at Iyana-Iba.
Nura, 20, denied responsibility for the alleged crime. The Katsina-born suspect, said: “I didn’t steal the bags of rice. I had only resumed work as a barrow pusher that morning when a man called me to call me carry some bags of rice for him at Agric bustop. He said it was 20 bags so I had to call Ahmed who is also a barrow pusher to assist in the carriage.
“We carried the bags of rice ten bags each and had not even gotten to Iyana-Iba when we heard people shouting thief thief. Since we knew we weren’t thieves we didn’t run. But surprisingly, the man who had called us to carry the bags of rice for him fled.
“We were caught and they started beating us that morning. We were late taken to the police station. But sincerely we didn’t steal from anyone,” he said.
As to whether the fleeing man had been patronising them before the incident, Nura said the man was a regular customer and they always carried various items for him but didn’t know he was dubious.
The Lagos state commissioner of police who paraded the suspects at the police headquarters in Ikeja however said investigations were on to arrest the fleeing suspect and also charge them all to court.
