Police arrest ex-Jigawa gov, Lamido in Kano

The police in Kano on Sunday arrested Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State.
Lamido was alleged to have instructed his supporters to resort to violence during a live programme on one of the radio stations in Kano in case the local government election in the state scheduled for July 1 does not favour them and ensure that the opposition PDP wins the elections by all means.
Operatives of zonal investigative bureau unit of Zone 1 command of the Nigeria Police Force were said to have whisked him away from his Sharada Kano residence in the early hours of Sunday.
When our correspondent visited the headquarters of Zone 1 located along BUK road, the former governor was still being held by the police who are yet to make any official statement on the issue.
However, confirming the development to newsmen, DSP Sambo Sokoto, said that contrary to earlier speculations, Sule Lamido was invited to the command and not arrested as a result of a petition against him by the government of Jigawa State over what it described as inciting statements capable of disturbing the public peace.
When asked when the former governor would be released, Sokoto said “it’s too early for anyone to say as investigations are still ongoing”.
Additional armed mobile officers were deployed to the Zone 1 Command for security reinforcement as supporters and well-wishers of Lamido beseech the command.
