PDP Floors APGA with over 83,000 Votes in Abia
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday morning declared Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Abia State governorship election held on April 11 and 25th 2015 supplementary election.
Ikpeazu polled a total of 264, 713 votes to defeat Dr. Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who polled 180,882 votes following the conduct on Saturday, of the supplementary election held in some wards in nine Local Government Areas in the state.
The supplementary election was conducted because the main election held on April 11 was declared inconclusive by INEC.
At the April 11 main election, Ikpeazu of PDP polled 248, 459 votes while Otti of APGA polled 165, 406 votes, leading with over 83,000 votes which INEC noted was less than the total number votes outstanding in areas where elections were cancelled or were not held at all.
At the supplementary election held on Saturday in some wards and units in nine Local Governments Areas, PDP got extra 16, 254 while APGA got 15, 476.
Aggregating the two election results, the state’s returning officer for the election, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba declared and returned Ikpeazu winner at about five am on Sunday having collated results from the areas where supplementary elections were held across the state.
The accreditation and voting were peaceful and orderly with security agents on hand to maintain law and order.
Reports have it that in all the places, covered from Umuahia North to Umuahia South, Aba North and south local government areas, the exercise was peaceful and orderly.
Turn out of voters in most places was low as some polling units recorded between 13% and 42% of total registered voters.
There was no incidence of violence.
