PDP defeats APC to reclaim Ibadan north federal constituency in by-election

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reclaimed the mantle of leadership in Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the recently concluded by-election since 2011.

The independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Fola Oyekunle as winner of the by-election on Sunday morning, having successfully collated the results from all the wards in the LG.

Professor Abiodun Oluwadare, who served as the Returning Officer of INEC made the declaration at the end of the collation exercise at Ikolaba High School, Ibadan.

“This is the declaration. I, Professor Abiodun Oluwadare, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2025 Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, held on the 16th day of August, 2024.

“That Folajinmi Oyekunle of the People’s Democratic Party, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the election,” Oluwadare said.

The election was held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Olaide Akinremi on July 10 who was a member of the All-Progressive Congress (APC) before his demise.

The position would now be occupied by the PDP candidate, Fola Oyekunle, having edged out as the winner of by defeating his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the APC by a wide margin.

According to the results of the election, Oyekunle (PDP) had 18, 404 votes. Akinremi (APC) came a distant second with 8, 312 votes. Akin-Alamu of ADC recorded 88 votes and Olajumoke (APGA) got 40 votes.

Dr. Adeniran Tella, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State, said the process was peaceful, with no reports of violence or malfunctioning Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines.

The outcome has been hailed as a significant win for the PDP who last occupied the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat in 2011.

This may also be seen as a major turning point for the PDP as they seek to win more seats in the house of representative ahead of the 2027 general election where they aim to reclaim the presidential seat.
