PDP, APGA fault inauguration of LGAs officials in Nasarawa

Confusion trails Nasarawa State as opposition parties in the state has dismissed the recent appointment of Interim Management Committee Chairmen (IMC) and members by the state government.
The opposition parties which includes; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) rejected the appointment in separate interviews with newsmen in Lafia.
They both explained that the manner in which 11 IMCs Chairmen and 148 Members were screened by the House of Assembly and inaugurated by the governor on the same day was suspicious.
According to the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the PDP, Mohammed Bwala, and APGA chairman Musa Saidu both said the announcement for the appointment was done on Monday 23, screened by Assembly and inaugurated by the governor the same day which was 24 October, 2017.
The PRO added that, as far as the PDP is concerned, any appointment of people under whatever name is illegal and unconstitutional.
“Our party would not accept anything short of what is contained in the constitution as regard to the status of people to manage the affairs at the local government level.
“The constitution only recognise elected officials to manage the affairs of LGAs, so this appointment is illegal and whatever the officials would do would amount to illegality,” he added.
Bwala revealed that in 2016, a High Court in the state had declared the appointment of LGAs officials’ illegal and ordered the government to conduct election within 140 days from the day the judgment was delivered.
On his part, Musa Saidu, APGA Chairman in the state called on the state governor to respect court order and conduct LG election.
“As the Chief Security Officer in the state, Governor Umaru Al-Makura should respect court order and the provision of the 1999 constitution as amended he has swore to protect.
“It is unfortunate to see a person that was supposed to protect the law in the forefront violating the law and court orders,” Saidu added.
The Daily Times reports that the governor sent the list of Chairmen of 11 out of 13 LGAs and 147 members to the Assembly on November 23, and they were screened and inaugurated the following day.
Recall also that a state High Court sitting in Keffi LGA of the state had recently dissolved the IMC Chairmen and ordered the state government to conduct election within 140 days.
