Osinbajo says NYSC is pivotal to national unity, promotes diverse culture
Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has described the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program for tertiary institution graduates as a means to further promote national unity and integration in the country.
Prof. Osinbajo stated that the scheme, which has remained relevant to the social well being of the Nigeria youths, has also help promote the richly diverse culture and traditions of the people.
The Acting President spoke at the swearing in ceremony for the 2017 Batch A Stream II National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members held at Ikare Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The Daily Times reported that the event was to herald the orientation course for the new NYSC members posted to Ondo State for their compulsory one year service program.
A total of 1880 corps members comprising 1417 males and 465 females reported for camp activities in the state.
Prof. Osinbajo acknowledged the significant task of the scheme especially during the conduct of election, census, national health and immunization campaign in the country.
The Acting President who was represented by the Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG), Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde, added that the scheme has also tremendously demonstrates what the youth can do for the country given the opportunity and challenges involves.
He charged the NYSC members to uphold the ideals of the scheme and remain conscientious in the discharge of their assignment in the state.
He also challenged them to key into the recently launched program of the Federal Government “Change Begins With Me” which is aimed at restoring national values in the country.
Prof. Osinbajo affirmed that the present administration was also aware of the challenges that face the NYSC such as security, deployment management but he assured of the Federal government’s commitment to fund the scheme to overcome its challenges.
Earlier, the Ondo State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr. Sunday Robert Aroni, pleaded with the state governor to encourage the 18 local government areas in the state to make their impact felt in the camp by erecting structures to ease accommodation problem faced in the camp by corps members and officials.
He commended the prospective NYSC members for their eagerness and readiness to serve their fatherland while soliciting their cooperation with the staff of the programme during their three months stay in the camp.
