Only 10% of Nigerian households own a Car, 2024 survey finds

Only one in 10 Nigerian households owns a car or truck, according to findings from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). The survey also found that 28% of households own a motorcycle or scooter.
The data reveals a significant urban-rural divide. Car and truck ownership is 15% in urban areas but just 5% in rural areas. Conversely, motorcycle and scooter ownership is higher in rural areas (32%) than in urban centers (23%).
The report, conducted by the National Population Commission (NPC) with partners including USAID, UNFPA, and UNICEF, also highlighted findings on information communication technology (ICT).
According to the survey, 90% of households own a mobile phone, 46% own a radio, and 43% own a television. Computer ownership is significantly lower, at 9%. The report noted that ICT ownership is generally higher in urban areas.
The NDHS also examined media consumption among women aged 15-49. Nearly one-third (30%) watch television at least once a week and 25% listen to the radio weekly, but only 3% read a newspaper. A majority (59%) of women in this group do not access any of these three media weekly.
Internet use among this demographic was 26% in the last 12 months. The report noted a stark regional disparity in internet access, with recent use lowest in Kebbi (3%) and highest in Lagos (72%).
