Trouble was said to have started midway into the voting process which began at about 10am when a group of suspected OPC members arrived at the polling centre insisting that it is either the voters vote for a particular presidential candidate or the voting will not go on.
Suspecting that their directive won’t be obeyed, they started manhandling those on the queue, seized the ballot boxes and burnt them with votes already cast.
The OPC members were said to have engaged the men of the OP MESA security outfit which raced to the polling centre as a result of a call put through to them in a gun duel, resulting in the death of the middle aged OPC member.
Voting could not go on as people ran for safety with many sustaining injuries.
A lady who said this was her first time to come out to vote speaking to the Daily Times described the experience as unfortunate and wondered why people would approach election as a do-or die affair.
