Olusosun dumpsite fire: Lagos orders relocation of residents

LAGOS State government on Monday directed residents living very close to Olusosun dumpsite that was recently gutted by fire to temporarily relocate from the area, in order to avert health hazards associated with inhaling of thick smokes emission from the dumpsite.

Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Hon. Hakeem Dickson gave this during a pre-event Press Conference on Vision Zero at Lagos State Secretariat located in Alausa, Ikeja area of the state.

Dickson said the advice became necessary in view of the smoke which continues to bellow from the site, adding that the state government was working towards ensuring zero accident in the next three years.

According to him, the major reason why the government launched the Vision Zero campaign is to ensure that corporate bodies and individuals are safety conscious.

He said it was in view of this that the state government, through the Lagos State Safety Commission, deemed it urgent to declare zero tolerance for workplace incidents through various strategies.

He said one of the approaches would be through the Lagos Vision Zero Conference with the theme: “A Mindset Change Towards Zero Harm,” contending that the move was in conformity with the recent sensitization by the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation on “Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset.”

Dickson disclosed that the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, would next month sign a Safety Policy Document on safety at the workplace at a 3-day conference being planned by the commission.

“You would also have observed series of incidences that have been happening recently which include: LPG Gas Explosions, fire incidences, building collapse workplace incidences amongst others. These incidences are of grave concern to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and this is why we have continued to sensitize the public and engage stakeholders in order to bring safety to their consciousness and make it a lifestyle.

“Lagos Vision Zero is a transformational approach to prevention that interprets the tripod stand of Safety, Health, and Wellbeing at all levels at work. It was borne out of the need to reduce to the barest minimum, hazards, and risks in the workplace and ensure Zero Injury, Zero Accident, Zero Death and Promote Wellbeing and Health,” he said.

Speaking further, Dickson explained that, “Vision Zero is not about Showmanship, Marksmanship and definitely not about Censorship but about Leadership, Ownership and Partnership with all the stakeholders in Lagos State.

“Towards Vision Zero – Lagos effort; Strong Tripartite support; Raise Vision Zero Awareness; Engagement through individual, companies and stakeholders’ groups.”
