Oborevwori: N10bn approved to clear retirees’ pension backlog in Delta

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta state has approved the release of N10 billion for the payment of outstanding pension arrears owed retirees in the state.

Oborevwori announced the approval on Tuesday during a meeting with the Pension Board, led by Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, chairman of the Bureau of State Pensions, and Anthony Ozu Osanekwu, state chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees.

The governor said the meeting was convened to address issues concerning the welfare of retirees, including the settlement of backlogs and challenges under the contributory pension scheme.

He explained that since assuming office, his administration had paid N36.4 billion in pensions, with N1.4 billion released monthly to meet obligations. He added that the state had not defaulted on monthly pension payments under his watch.

Oborevwori said arrears predating his administration would now be tackled with the N10 billion release.

“Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority,” he said.

The governor also announced the constitution of an oversight team to supervise the implementation of the release, stressing that transparency and accountability would be ensured.

Ogidi-Gbegbaje described the approval as a “pleasant surprise”, adding that the funds would bring relief to pensioners. He assured that the N10 billion would be used exclusively for pension payments.

Osanekwu said the decision exceeded the expectations of retirees.

“You took us unawares; what we were expecting was far less than the N10 billion you just approved,” he said. “I am elated, and I know that when pensioners across the state hear this news, they will be very happy.”
