Nothing can threaten Okowa’s re-election in 2019, Delta Speaker, lists priorities
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya has reaffirmed his positions on the future his party in the state saying: “the PDP is fully planted everywhere in Delta State and nothing will threaten Okowa’s re-election in 2019. We will stand by him”.
Igbuya who spoke on the governorship position in 2019, tenure and other matters at the first anniversary thanksgiving service of the Sixth Assembly was full of praises and accolades for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
His words: “By the legislative rule, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is the 30th member of the Delta State House of Assembly. He is a miracle working governor. Delta State should count itself as blessed for producing somebody like Okowa. He has performed well under an unfriendly economic situation and will continue to do his good work for the state”.
The Speaker commended Okowa for his fatherly support and regular payment of salaries to the workers, saying: “We will continue to support Governor Okowa and all his programmes aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of people of the state”.
Focusing on stability, unity and economic reforms, Igbuya said: “it is in the interest of Delta State for Okowa to continue in office beyond May 2019” and urged Deltans at home and abroad to continue to pray for Governor Okowa.
Begging his colleagues to forgive him for past mistakes, he said: “It is not easy leading 28 brains. Let us continue to work in unity”.
Igbuya, who also made a critical appraisal of the Delta State House of Assembly, described the Sixth Assembly as “the most stable and promising”, saying in its first year, the House received a total of 23 bills, 53 motions and 18 reports.
Igbuya, announced that “The governor has so far assented to the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Law (Amendment), 2015, Appropriation Law, 2016, Delta State Contributory Health Commission Law 2015, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency Law, 2015; and Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board Law, 2015.
Igbuya who spoke at length about the yearning of Deltans for quick delivery of the dividends of democracy, dwindling oil revenue and its negative impact on the economy and capacity of government to meet basic commitments, described Governor Okowa as a blessing to Delta State.
He also spoke on the sanitization of some local governments in the state, saying: “We must also not forget the role of the Assembly in the sanitization of the Local Government system. In the light of great insecurity and evidence of financial fraud, occasioned by flagrant disregard for constituted authority, the House suspended the Executive Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area. It subsequently set up an adhoc committee to verify the authenticity of the various petitions levelled against him. On grounds of financial recklessness, fraud and diversion of funds, the House relieved the chairman of his duties as Executive Chairman and Accounting Officer of Uvwie LGA”.
He continued; “Sequel to the impeachment notice forwarded to the House by 12 of the 15 councilors of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, the committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs of the House suspended the Executive Chairman of the council. This was necessary to give the House the opportunity to carry out a thorough investigation into the issues raised. I am happy to inform you that she is back to her seat”.
