Nigeria’s Kayode Adewale named finalist for 2025 UNESCO’s global teacher prize

Adewale teaches Mathematics and STEM at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School in Ogun State, where he is celebrated for his innovative teaching methods and commitment to uplifting underprivileged students.

This recognition was awarded by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It emphasizes the exceptional educators who are making impactful changes worldwide.

Joining a distinguished group of educators from various countries, Adewale has demonstrated outstanding innovation, inclusivity, and dedication in his teaching.

The finalists, comprising 30 males and 20 females selected from thousands of nominees, are celebrated for their efforts to drive change in their schools and communities by addressing critical global challenges, promoting equity, and inspiring the next generation.

Adewale’s teaching journey focuses on making complex mathematical concepts accessible to students from low-income farming families in his semi-urban community, as highlighted in a profile accompanying his selection.

By using culturally relevant pedagogy, he has integrated local languages, such as Yoruba and Hausa, into his lessons, creating relatable and engaging learning experiences.

Additionally, Adewale has taught students to utilize smartphones as academic tools, using apps and virtual platforms to enhance their performance in national and regional exams.

Beyond the classroom, he has trained over 30,000 teachers through his Transformation1090 Initiative, equipping them with the skills to incorporate technology into their teaching practices.
