Nigerian passport climbs to 88th in global ranking — highest in 5 years

Nigeria’s passport has recorded its highest global ranking in five years, moving up to 88th position on the Henley Passport Index released on July 18, 2025.

The country jumped from 199th to 88th place, granting Nigerian passport holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 54 countries.

The Henley Passport Index, updated quarterly, ranks passports based on the number of destinations holders can enter without a prior visa. It relies on official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The latest ranking is being viewed as a significant boost for Nigeria’s global mobility and a reflection of the country’s ongoing diplomatic and immigration reforms.

Experts attribute the improvement to enhanced bilateral relations, foreign policy shifts, and sustained efforts by the federal government to improve Nigeria’s international standing.

Reacting to the development, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, called it “a clear sign of Nigeria’s growing global relevance and improving international cooperation.”

“This is a proud moment for us,” he said.

“It shows that our work to enhance bilateral relations, strengthen national security, and streamline passport services is paying off.”

The upgrade comes amid reforms at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), including the rollout of an enhanced e-passport system and efforts to reduce processing backlogs.

Despite the leap, Nigeria still lags behind African countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa in passport strength.

However, officials say the progress provides fresh momentum to expand travel freedom for Nigerians across more regions.
