Nigeria has a lot to celebrate- Glo

Fully integrated telecommunications company, Globacom, has listed reasons for Nigerians to celebrate another anniversary of the current democratic dispensation.

Nigeria is marking the 18th year of unbroken democratic rule on May 29, 2017. It is the longest democratic rule in the country since its independence in 1960.

According to a statement by Globacom to commemorate Nigeria’s democracy day, the current economic and socio-political realities are not enough to obliterate the clear gains of the 18-year-old democratic dispensation.

Listing the gains, Globacom said Nigerians now have the freedom the founding fathers fought for, the freedom of expression, the freedom of association and also the freedom to choose who leads them. The company said these gains are worth celebrating and defending.

Globacom recalled that Nigeria had peacefully transited to new governments three times since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1999, with the last transition taking place from a ruling party to an opposition party; something that had never happened before in the country at national level.

The company said this shows that the country will continue to make swift progress.

“Democracy by its nature is aimed at building a free society which creates the environment for nation building.

We wish, therefore, that the people of Nigeria will take advantage of the sustained democratic experience to collectively and individually participate in the task of charting the course of progress for their local government areas, states and the country as a whole” Globacom said.
