Nigeria at 57: Amosun preaches unity, flays calls for secession
As Nigerians celebrate 57 years of the country’s independence, they have been told to uphold and strengthen the unity binding them, in order to fulfil the dream of the founding fathers.
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, gave the charge at the special Thanksgiving Service held to commemorate Nigeria’s 57th Independence anniversary, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, yesterday.
He said, though, the nation has been experiencing series of challenges, ranging from insecurity, economic downturn, corruption, among others, the people still need to be united, noting that secession will be disastrous and regrettable.
The governor, represented by his Deputy, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, called on all and sundry to continue praying for the manifestation of the desired positive change that will help the nation reclaim its lost glory.
Amosun assured the people that the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government, is committed to meeting their aspirations.
Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop of Ijebu Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Olusina Fape, said
Nigerians should turn away from their sins and call on God to heal the country, as the challenges facing it, such as agitation for restructuring, sessation, insurgency and strikes, amongst others, can only be overcome through prayers.
The cleric, who identified corruption and selfishness as the two main problems of the country, called on politicians to unite for the benefit of the people and development of the country.
He emphasised that when God answers the prayers of Nigeria, there would be peace, harmony, progress, development and economic stability in the country.
