Niger governor signs 2 bills into law


Governor Abubakar Sani -Bello of Niger state has signed into law a bill passed by the state House of Assembly to establish the Niger state Water and Sewage Corporation.
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasara Dan- Malam made this known during a briefing after the weekly State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Minna.
According to the commissioner, the law comes into effect from March 25.
Dan- Malam explained that the essence of the water and sewage corporation law is to achieve a developed water system in the state with the establishment of an independent, autonomous and commercially viable utility that ensures efficient and sustainable delivery of safe, clean drinking water to the people of the state.
The establishment of the Niger state Water and Sewage Corporation is the climax of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored Effective Water Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) programme that seeks to give access to potable water to 150,000 households in six states in Nigeria including Niger state.
In an another development, the governor also signed into law a bill passed by the state House of Assembly for the Niger state owned tertiary institutions academic staff retirement age from 60 years to 65 years.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasara Dan- Malam made this known at the Government House, Minna.
“The older the better in academic performance of academic staff and we cannot afford to lose them earlyz and therefore, Governor Abubakar Sani -Bello found it necessary to review the bill for the benefit of the state,” he said.
