Niger bans street begging, domesticates modern penal law

The Niger state government has now made it an offence for any person to beg or solicit for alms openly on the streets in the state.

The ban on street begging in the state by the state government is not unconnected with the current security challenges confronting the state and the nation.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Mohammad Idris made this known at a press briefing at Government House, Minna, after the state executive council meeting.

He said that due to the rising rate of crime and insecurity which was becoming a source of concern in the state, the council had no option other than to approve the ban with immediate effect.

Idris warned that anyone arrested for violating the ban will be prosecuted no matter where he or she comes from, while the parents of children arrested for violation would be hunted for prosecution accordingly.

Meanwhile, the state government has concluded plans for the domestication of an amended Penal Code as agreed by the 19 northern states.

He said this was in line with the modern criminal activities like terrorism, kidnappings, cyber crime, banditry and others that would be taking care by the proposed amendments to the extant law.

He further stated that the council has approved the establishment of multi -door court house where cases can be settled without going to conventional courts.
