NIESV attributes land-based taxation as alternative source to nation’s economy

Nigerian institution of Estate Surveyors and valuers, (NIESV), Akwa Ibom state branch has attributed land based taxation as a ready alternative source in boosting the nation’s economy, as revenue from oil has nosedived following global drop in oil prices.

Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Akwa Ibom state branch, ESV. Udo Egerton stated this in Uyo yesterday during a one day mandatory continuing professional development seminar for year 2017 for its members and students studying the profession in various tertiary institutions in the state.

The seminar which has as its theme, “Real Estate taxation, a veritable tool for economic recovery and sustainability” was also used as a refresher course for the professionals in the field.

He said “The development shows that more countries in the world are designing and developing non-petrol and oil powered vehicles daily, this situation which portends a bleak future for oil depending economies really needs land based taxation as an alternative source to boost our economy’’.

“With this development, the institution of estate surveyors and valuers also has a role to play in the nation’s economy, that is why this seminar is necessary to enrich and update the knowledge of our members.’’

Former Chairman of NIESV, Lagos State Branch, ESV Elias Onome, said the seminar is a welcome development and believes it would upgrade member’s professional knowledge towards meeting up the general acceptable global practice standard while also as professionals have a role to play for the economy to experience boost of revenue.

He commended the Akwa Ibom State branch of the body for their initiative to float a workshop of this magnitude for members despite the recession experience, adding that the estate valuers have major role to play in boosting the nation’s economy.

Giving highlights of the seminar, the institution’s public relations officer, ESV. Obot Akpan said the seminar have surely succeeded in achieving the institution’s desired objective by paving way to tackle lapses experience in their profession,

adding that members have gain a lot from this year’s Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) seminar 2017.
