NGO seeks to revive reading culture in FCT secondary schools

The Reading Culture Advocacy Initiative (RCAI) has called on students to imbibe the culture of reading as it remains the key to success in academics.

Executive Director of RCAI, Dr. Okoro Chukwudum, made the call yesterday in Abuja at an event to commemorate this year’s World Book and Copyright Day which is always celebrated on April 23.

While addressing the students of GSS Tudun Wada, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, he noted that the importance of reading can never be over-emphasized, thus the need for students to read not only to pass their exams, but to secure their future by gaining knowledge and skills to succeed in every sphere of life.

“The world today is knowledge-based and books are among the sources from which knowledge is derived. It is only in reading that we can derive the knowledge and skills in them.

“Therefore, reading is most important in knowledge and skill acquisition which we need to succeed in life and in the world. As students, to succeed in academics, you must read,” he advised.

Lamenting the declining rate of reading culture among students and youth, and the need for to revive the habit, RCAI donated copies of books to some selected secondary schools in the FCT.

The benefiting schools are Government Secondary School Tudun Wada, Government Secondary School Gosa, Government Secondary School Abaji, Government Secondary School, Dutse, Government Secondary School Dutse Alhaji, Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada, Government Secondary School Kuje and Government Secondary School, Pegi.

Others include, Government Secondary School, Kwali, Government Secondary School Yangoji and Government Day Secondary School, Gwagwalada.

Head of Department, Co-curricular department in the FCT Secondary Education Board, Gorah Akin, commended the organization for the initiative, noting that it couldn’t have come at a better time than now.

He urged the students to take their studies very seriously and imbibe the culture reading as it is the only sure way to success.

The event which was in collaboration with the FCT Secondary Education Board and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) witnessed book presentation to selected secondary schools in the FCT.
