NBA releases guidelines for elections, adopts e-Voting again

In its bid to ensure a free and fair election, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has adopted e- voting to elect new national officers of the association that will pilot the affairs of the bar.
Speaking while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Election Guideline Committee headed by Professor Auwalu Yadudu, noted that the association will make conscious
effort to ensure a rancour free election is conducted.
The President of the NBA, Mr. Abubakar Mahmud and other national officers of the association are expected to bow out of office in about three months from now after the expiration of their tenure.
Daily Times recalls that about three years ago, when the e-voting was adopted to elect the present leadership of the bar, some aggrieved candidates approached the court to challenge the outcome of the election.
However, Professor Yadudu and other committee members who released the guidelines assured that the association will conduct a better election this time around.
He said the Eastern zone is expected to produce the President and the 1st Vice President.
According to him, the 2nd Vice President has been zoned to the west and the General secretary and the 3rd Vice President to the north.
The committee said, “Every member who is of financial good standing is eligible to vote. It will be by e-voting. We’ve tried it before and we are perfecting it. Even, if you are out of the country, you can vote. Voting will last for 24 hours.
“We can assure you that we have made efforts to review what had happened in the last election and. We have taken measures to ensure that what we experienced at the last election does not arise again.
“We are engaging with our branches and we will do a better job this time around. We want this election to be as transparent and secure as possible.
“We have also reached out to our branches to give us clean data of their members. We know the importance of clean data in e-voting, so, we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a hitch free exercise”.
The election is expected to hold on 27 and 25 of July.
