Natural Hair or Weaves?

For as long as I can recall, natural hair and weaves have always been debated about and the society, mostly men, are of the opinion that women only wear weaves because they are being fake, deceitful or are insecure about their appearance but this is not necessarily true. Women are able to spot another woman with a weave no matter how well fixed it maybe but men find it difficult to do this and that’s why most of them feel deceived by women after they realise that the hair they have been admiring is not their natural hair but a weave. Sorry men!
Women sometimes buy and use weaves or wigs for hair care reasons, for a change of appearance or to impress their fellow women and the other gender as well. There are numerous reasons why women buy weaves. From my findings, some men prefer a woman with her natural hair but at the same time, they don’t mind her wearing a weave while some were strongly against weaves and would rather a woman be on her natural hair 24/7. I find it quite funny how these men can appreciate these same weaves on their female celebrity crushes but cannot stand it on their own women.
Most people in our society, majority of them being the men, think that weaves are only for bald women and this is wrong because there are women who wear weaves for a change of appearance even though they have long and healthy hair. For me, everything in life has its advantages and disadvantages. Constantly wearing your natural hair without switching things up has its disadvantages and many people fail to acknowledge them.
Some of them are:
1. It is really tough to maintain because you sometimes have to wait 3-4 weeks to wash it. Then you need to untangle, steam, shampoo, dry and style it. This is really exhausting and time consuming.
- It shrinks too fast.
- Although you have a variety of ways to style your hair, it is time consuming to do so perfectly.
- Breakage will become more reoccurring because of the duration at which it is left unwashed.
Even with all these, you still stand to gain healthier edges, thicker and fuller lengthy hair, the sense of pride and confidence you get when a stranger compliments your natural hair and many more. Weaves come in different exciting colours, lengths and styles ranging from straight, curly, loose, and wavy. You name it. But when it is worn for too long and too often, it can do some good amount of damage to the hair.
Some of the disadvantages of weaves are:
- To get the best weave cost a small fortune and if you can’t afford it, you have to settle for less which are weaves made out of synthetic fibres.
- When it is done too frequently or too tight, it can cause damage and breakage to the roots of the hair.
- Sometimes, the process of attaching the weave might be really painful and can even leave you with painful blisters for days.
- It is also possible that you might have a negative skin reaction to weaves. Be it human hair or synthetic fibres. Whether a woman wears weaves or not should not be a criteria or yardstick to judge her by and her husband, fiancée or boyfriend should not condemn her just because of a few pieces of weave attached to her head as it doesn’t determine how good of a partner she is or will be.
