Nassarawa farmers jubilate as state records first rain

Farmers in Nasarawa State have expressed happiness at the first rainfall in the area that occurred on Wednesday, March 15.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that residents of Nassarawa Eggon witnessed the rainfall in the early hours of the day.
NAN also reports that there were some drizzles in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Nathaniel Alaku, a resident of Nassarawa Eggon and a farmer, was optimistic that the showers would reduce the heatwaves being witnessed in the area.
Alaku said with the onset of the rains, farmers could begin preparation for the next farming season.
“The rain took everybody by surprise as most of us in the town were shocked because there was no sign of lightening or thunder that usually precede rainfalls.
“We thank God for His blessing. This is because the downpour will settle the dust and will also reduce the heat and we are also ready for farming,’’ he said.
Mr Solomon Akawu hoped that the rainfall would mark the beginning of good harvest for the farming season.
“This is the first rain in this year and the rain will boost farmers’ morale for farming and bumper harvest.
Akawu, however, appealed to the Federal Government and state governments not to relent in their efforts to boost farming activities to fight poverty and enhance food production in the country.
Mrs Elizabeth Thomas said that the rain was a blessing from God.
“The down pour is a blessing from God and we have to thank Him for the rain as farmers will now prepare for their farming activities,” Thomas said.
