‘My marriage did not last long because it was public’ – Toke Makinwa

Toke Makinwa, popular media personality, has revealed the reason her previous marriage did not last long and the public criticism she faced after she got divorced.
Toke Makinwa made the revelation in a recent interview with another media personality, Chude Jideonwo, where she discussed the challenges that comes with a ‘public’ marriage.
The actress acknowledged that the public scrutiny of her marriage contributed to her divorce even though she was going through personal issues that many people could not comprehend.
“People frequently underestimate survivors, believing their struggles were not serious only because they survived and went on with their lives.
“People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 minutes stronger, it unsettles others.
“Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it,” she said.
Speaking further, Toke added that she decided to leave because her marriage was already in the public eye, adding that she might have stayed longer if the connection were private.
“The emotional intensity and scrutiny made the situation dangerous for my health. “Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public.
“But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she added.
She clarified that choosing to be herself rather than staying in the marriage was the only way to save her life and future.
Affirming that she had overcome the struggles, Toke Makinwa, however, acknowledged that the marriage was a poisonous environment for her.
