Mobile court in Benin sentences 6 for curfew violation
An Uselu Mobile Court in Benin, Edo state on Wednesday sentenced six persons to community service for violating the curfew imposed by the state government to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
The state government had on Sunday imposed a statewide dusk-to-dawn curfew, which commenced on Monday from 7pm to 6am daily.
Prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Ama Iyamu, said that the six persons, who were apprehended at New Benin axis, pleaded guilty to the offence.
Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Rusberth Imafidon, directed the convicts to carry out community services in line with the state government’s non-custodial regulation.

The punishment include clearing drains, shrubs, picking of trash, compulsory community sensitisation and grass cutting, among others.
The sentences ranged from five to 10 days non-custodial community service, while the offenders would be handled by correctional officers during the punishment period.
The same mobile court had on Tuesday sentenced 32 persons for violation of the curfew.
The apprehended persons were brought from New Benin, Okhoro and Ugbowo.
