Minister says ending violence against women requires collective action

Achieving gender equality and eliminating all forms of violence against women requires collaborative effort from all sectors of the country, the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen has said.

According to her, government alone cannot achieve the task as it requires the collaboration of stakeholders and victims to report cases and incidents of violence to the appropriate authorities.

The minister stated this while addressing newsmen over the weekend to kick-start activities commemorating the international women’s day in Abuja.
“Striving to achieve gender equality and eliminate violence against women is on course, but government alone cannot achieve this mission.
“This is why we have always engaged in advocacy and public awareness for women to speak up.
“The implementation of the Child Rights Act and opening of the sex offenders registers have been some of the measures and many more and being strategized in the long run,” she declared.
Tallen added that this year’s international women’s day celebration will provide an avenue for collaboration with other stakeholders in promoting girl -child education, especially at primary and secondary school levels.
She further stated that this year’s celebration coincides with the 25 years of the Beijing platform for action adopted in 1995 to accelerate gender equality across the globe.
European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ketil Karlsen raised concerns over the inequality rate in Nigeria, urging the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to double their efforts in addressing the trend.
He however, expressed confidence that some measures put in place will yield some positives, adding that “the sex offenders register and the sexual assault bill in tertiary institutions introduced in Nigeria is a welcome development, but more needs to be done.
“Nigeria must take decisive action to end all forms of violence against women at all levels of government.”
