Minister, NYSC boss task corps members on patriotism

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have been urged to be patriotic as well as remain good ambassadors of the scheme and the country at large. 

FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu and the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Ibrahim gave the charge while speaking at the passing-out ceremony of the 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps members in Abuja on Thursday.

In separate remarks, they called on corps members to shun every act inimical to the progress of the country, but rather build upon the bonds of love and unity already established with host communities during the course of their primary assignment. 

The minister said that the people of the FCT will never forget the corps members in a hurry because the corps members touched their lives positively.

She however, commended the corps members for their laudable efforts in the area of primary health care delivery, mass literacy, enlightenment campaigns, agricultural and socio -economic development during their stay in the FCT.

“I believe that this experience you just had, of rendering selfless service for the past year has placed you in a better position not only to appreciate the problems we are dealing with as a nation, but also to motivate you to find ways of tackling these issues with a view to finding lasting solutions to them.

“You must be patriotic and strive to build upon the bonds of love and unity you have established in your host communities during the course of your primary assignment.

“In this new dispensation, our beloved country looks up to you; its vibrant youths to contribute in no small measure to the accomplishment of its programmes, especially this administration’s fight against bribery and corruption, kidnapping, and armed robbery that will hinder the socio-economic and political development of this nation,” Aliyu stated

Similarly, the NYSC director-general, urged the corps members to remain patriotic as well as shun any act that will tarnish their image, that of the scheme and the country at large. 

While stressing that there is reward for hard work, he expressed optimism that if the corps members take advantage of the skill acquisition embedded in them in the course of their service year, the sky will be their limit. 

FCT NYSC Coordinator, Hajiya Walida Isa, revealed that out of the 5, 657 corps member who have successfully completed their service year in the FCT, three corps members received award for distinguishing themselves during the service year.

She also revealed that the FCT lost 11 corps members from while about 64 corps members were found wanting in their commitment to national service, noting that they will receive commensurate punishment in accordance with the provisions of the relevant laws.
