Man attacked for opposing daughter’s genital mutilation

For preventing her daughter from going through the painful ritual of genital mutilation, a man, Mr. Kennedy Osadolor narrowly escaped death by those who were bent on carrying out the age-long culture on her daughter( names withheld).

According to Osadolor, who live in Akowonjo area of Lagos State, the incident, which took place on April 11, 2016, has continued to give him nightmares till date.

He said the incident would have led to his losing his life, but for mother luck, as he escaped with battered face and bruises all over his body for daring to prevent the circumcision of his underage daughter.

He said he has since been nursing those injuries while also fearing for his life.

Narrating his experience to The Daily Times on Monday, he said following the attack, he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ogba, Lagos, where he received medical attention.

He said, “I now live in fear because I oppose what I consider to be archaic and run parallel to modernity”.

He said the incident, which had since been reported at a local police station in the community, was yet to be acted upon by the police.

Osadolor said that Nigerians should discard cultures that could cause permanent psychological trauma on the young ones, and embrace those that would promote development.

He urged good spirited Nigerians, government at all levels and Non-Governmental Organisations to rise against what he called the “evils associated with female genital mutilation”.
